Fans Convinced Deion Sanders Will Leave After Colorado AD Steps Down

Deion Sanders has been leading Colorado's football team since 2023. Although the fans in Boulder adore him, they're not entirely convinced he'll be around for the 2026 season.

On Thursday afternoon, Colorado athletic director Rick George announced that he's stepping down from his role in July. He'll serve as a special advisor to the university's chancellor and new athletic director.

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as Athletic Director for the University of Colorado for the last 13 years, but after considerable thought and discussions with my family dating back to last spring, I have decided it is time for new leadership to guide the department,” George said in a statement. “I wanted to make this announcement now in order to give Chancellor Schwartz plenty of time to find the right person for Colorado, and I look forward to doing everything I can to ensure a smooth transition. I also wanted to time my announcement so that I could support Coach Prime and our football team this season, which I’m looking forward to continuing in my new role."

It's worth noting that George hired Sanders in December 2022. Since he won't be running the show at Colorado much longer, fans are unsure about Coach Prime's future.

"This is the first domino which means Prime is on the clock. He might step down seasons end to avoid getting fired at the end or mid point of next season," one fan said.

"Prime is leaving soon," a second fan wrote on X.

"Coach Prime is outta there," another fan declared.

Deion Sanders isn't done yet.

Just two weeks ago, Sanders was asked about his future at Colorado following a blowout loss to Utah. He made it clear that he's not interested in walking away from the Buffaloes.

"I'm a one day at a time type of guy. We've got to win. That's the only thing I'm worried about. My health is wonderful. I'm good. I'm not thinking about anything but winning," Sanders said. "I'm going to coach until I don't have that urge to get up in the morning and go get it. And go help and go be a blessing."

Colorado is 3-7 heading into Week 12. The program has already been eliminated from bowl eligibility.
