The college football world received devastating news this week regarding longtime coach Lou Holtz.
Kyle Sutherland of HawgBeat reported on Thursday that Holtz entered hospice care. A few hours later, ABC57 in Indiana confirmed this sad news. However, there aren't a ton of details out at the moment.
"A source close to the family confirmed with ABC57 that Notre Dame legend, Lou Holtz, has reportedly entered into hospice care at the age of 89," the report stated.
After this update about Holtz was made public, football fans from around the country went on social media to share their fondest thoughts about him.
"Please say a prayer for Coach Lou Holtz, who is reportedly in hospice," one person wrote on social media. "A great coach, devout Catholic, patriotic American, and a fantastic but humble all around human. Thankful he was at Notre Dame during my time there. He made you proud, and got everyone excited."
"Sending positive thoughts to Lou Holtz and his loved ones during this difficult time," a second person commented.
"Please join me in lifting Coach Lou Holtz and his family in prayer during this tender time," another person said. "Coach Holtz has impacted countless lives through his faith, leadership, and example—far beyond the football field. As he enters hospice care, may he be surrounded by peace, comfort, and the deep knowledge of how loved and appreciated he is."
"This breaks my heart. He was a role model of mine growing up," a college football fan replied.

Lou Holtz's legacy can't be denied.
Whether you love him or not, Holtz's success at the collegiate level can't be ignored. He had an impressive run at NC State and Arkansas before reaching new heights at Notre Dame.
During the 1988 season, Holtz went 12-0 and led the Fighting Irish to a national championship. Overall, the two-time Paul "Bear" Bryant Award winner had a 249-132-7 record as a college football coach.
Outside of his success on the gridiron, Holtz was recognized with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2020.
"It’s the highest honor or award you could possibly receive, and I receive it with mixed emotions. First of all, I’m humbled," Holtz said, via Fox News Digital. "There are many more people far worthy than me, I can assure you. Nobody is more appreciative than me."
We're wishing Holtz all the best during this sensitive time.
