FBS Oversight Committee announces changes to football calendar

The FBS Oversight Committee, one of the bodies that governs and enacts rules, has announced some new rule changes to the college football schedule, mainly affecting the transfer portal and preseason practice schedule.
- The Transfer Portal will go from 15 days down to 10, beginning Jan. 4, 2027.
- Teams can now only have 21 preseason practices instead of 25.
- Teams will now be allowed two out-of-season practice periods, which replace the previous spring/summer model.
“The work of the calendar subcommittee in building off the American Football Coaches Association’s recommendations has been critical in establishing clarity with the college football calendar,” FBS Oversight Committee Vice Chair Josh Brooks said. “We dedicated a tremendous amount of time and energy to ensure we built a calendar that best fits the needs of our coaches and student-athletes. I am proud of this work and appreciate the efforts of our group, which included athletics directors, coaches, student-athletes and commissioners from various schools and conferences.”
