There was little doubt, especially now that he's the quarterback of the No. 1 team in the nation.
Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza is going to New York. The Miami native and former Christopher Columbus High product has been named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy Award, the most prestigious individual honor in college football.
Mendoza likely cemented his status as a Heisman finalist when Curt Cignetti and the Hoosiers knocked off the previous No. 1 team, Ohio State, in the Big Ten championship game on Saturday in Indianapolis.
Mendoza is now primed to become the first Indiana player to win the award, and the second player in as many seasons from south Florida to be so honored. Current Jacksonville Jaguars two-way rookie Travis Hunter was the winner in 2024 after his historic season at Colorado.
The other 2025 finalists are Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia and Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin.
Will Fernando Mendoza win the Heisman Trophy?
According to BetMGM, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza is the favorite at -5000 and currently lapping the field. Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin and Notre Dame quarterback Jeremiyah Love are next at +3000.
