Fernando Mendoza's stats and accomplishments with Indiana football

ATLANTA — Indiana football quarterback Fernando Mendoza made his College Football Playoff debut a memorable one.

The No. 1 Hoosiers’ (14-0) starter threw for 192 yards (14 of 16) and three touchdowns to help his team beat Alabama 38-3 in the Rose Bowl. He set Rose Bowl records with an 87.5% completion percentage (minimum of 10 attempts) and 250.2 passer rating.

Mendoza has been having that same kind of impact all season long to help IU compete for a national title. Here’s a look at his 2025 stats:

Mendoza heads into the Peach Bowl with 3,172 yards passing with a 72.3% completion percentage and 42 total touchdowns (36 passing) and six interceptions. He leads the country with a 184.7 quarterback rating.

He became the only FBS quarterback since at least 1996 with multiple games of at least 90% completion rate and four touchdown passes in a game.

Mendoza might have flirted with a 4,000-yard season had IU not taken him out early eight times this season in the midst of blowouts. He has only attempted 58 passes in the fourth quarter this season for the Hoosiers.

Mendoza broke IU’s single-season touchdown record that was set by his predecessor Kurtis Rourke. He’s the first Hoosiers quarterback to throw 30-plus touchdowns in a season. He also set the single-season record for scoring with 42 total touchdowns and counting.

If Indiana were to reach the national title game, Mendoza would likely have a chance at breaking Nate Sudfeld’s single-season passing yards mark of 3,573. Mendoza heads into the Peach Bowl with 3,172 yards.

He’s only the fifth quarterback in team history to throw for 3,000-plus yards in a season.

Indiana football’s Fernando Mendoza is most decorated player in program history

Mendoza became the program’s first Heisman winner this season and accomplished the feat by a wide margin.

He finished first in the voting with 2,362 points (643 first-place votes) ahead of Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia (1,435 points), Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love (719 points) and Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin (432 points).

Mendoza was the first player since 2022 to finish first in all six of the Heisman’s geographic regions.

He also won the Davey O’Brien Award, Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Player of the Year, AP and College Football National Player of the Year. He was named the Big Ten’s Offensive Player of the Year and Quarterback of the Year.
