Football players from just one area high school team that began playing practicing in early August for their fall season are still playing in the first week of December, and those athletes play football for Lakeland.
The Dreadnaughts have advanced to the state semifinals for the fourth year in a row and is playing host to Ponte Vedra in the Class 5A state semifinals. A win will send Lakeland to the state championship game for the fourth year in a row, surpassing the three-year streak from 2004 to 2006.
In the other 5A state semifinal game, defending champion St. Thomas Aquinas is playing Riverdale. If Lakeland and St. Thomas win, they will meet in the championship game for the seventh time. Lakeland has won four of the six meeting but lost last season.
