The Florida Gators came away with a dominant 66-21 win over FAU in their Week 1 matchup. It was a great start to the Jon Sumrall era, as he took over as the head coach this offseason.

Sumrall came to the program with recent success, including a 23-4 record in two years at Troy, a 20-8 record at Tulane, and a College Football Playoff appearance over two seasons. He has shown the ability to instantly elevate programs and is establishing himself as one of the best coaches in college football.

He's off to a good start at Florida with the win over FAU, even though they were heavy favorites heading into the game.

Quarterback Aaron Philo had a solid debut as the starting quarterback for the Gators, completing 16 of 21 passes for 275 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception while rushing for 20 yards and a touchdown on six carries.

Wide receiver Vernell Brown III was the top target for Florida, finishing with six receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown.

Star running back Jadan Baugh had a great game on the ground, rushing for 160 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries. Baugh is proving that he is one of the best running backs in college football and will continue to be the leading piece for the Gators' offense.

Their defense also played at a high level, with Kamran James posting a sack and Myles Graham and Jamari Lyons each recording 0.5 sacks. Dijon Johnson and DJ Coleman also came away with an interception apiece for Florida's defense.

With Sumrall's group playing well on both sides of the ball, they have great momentum ahead of their Week 2 matchup against Campbell.

Although Florida struggled in the 2025 season, finishing 4-8, Sumrall has transformed the program by changing the culture and adding a ton of talent to the roster through the transfer portal.

If the Gators can continue to play at this level against stronger opponents, Sumrall's team could become a ranked program and make a push for a bowl game or the College Football Playoff.
