As the 2026 college football season approaches, preseason projections continue to identify the teams most likely to exceed expectations. While every offseason brings its share of bold predictions, a team that is seen to rebound from last years struggles is the Florida Gators.
After falling short of expectations last season, the Gators enter a new era under head coach Jon Sumrall with renewed optimism, a talented roster, and the belief that they have the pieces in place to return to SEC prominence.
ESPN identified the Gators as one of college football's top bounce-back candidates entering the 2026 season after a disappointing season a year ago.
The optimism surrounding the Gators begins with first-year head coach Jon Sumrall, whose track record of quickly building winning programs has generated excitement in Gainesville. Along with Sumrall and the coaching staff he assembled, including offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner and defensive coordinator Brad White, he generated the majority of the buzz from SEC media days, leaving media members stunned by the way he commanded the room.
On the field, Florida is returning one of the SEC's most talented rosters. Running back Jadan Baugh headlines the offense after emerging as one of the conference's top playmakers, while edge rusher Jayden Woods anchors a defense.
The Gators also addressed key needs through the transfer portal, adding quarterback Aaron Philo, wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. and center Harrison Moore to strengthen the roster.
Last season, the talent was there, and the new coaching staff has the opportunity to maximize the roster and the offseason additions to live up to the expectations.
If they can do that, Florida could be the SEC's biggest bounce-back story.
