The one thing the Florida Gators have going for them is the recruiting momentum over the last few months under Jon Sumrall.
The Florida Gators haven’t had a lot of recent success when it comes to recruiting, but head coach Jon Sumrall hasn’t stopped working toward. On Sunday afternoon, Sumrall landed another commitment, but it’s in the 2028 recruiting class in wide receiver Armani Strong.
What’s most impressive isn’t that Sumrall landed another top recruit, but that he did it in such strong fashion. It’s a great sign that the Gators landed Strong, but even more that Sumrall got him over the likes of the Miami Hurricanes, Michigan Wolverines, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and USC Trojans.
Jon Sumrall lands 2028 commitment over multiple blue bloods
The Gators have been more idea than success since Urban Meyer left the program. They have made a few of New Year’s Six bowl games, including three in a row under Dan Mullen. Unlike the tenures or Meyer and Steve Spurrier, the Gators only felt like national title threats a couple of times.
Sumrall is looking to change that and is making recruiting the big focus. He already has 24 commitments in the class of 2027, and Strong becomes his first in 2028. A four-star out of Miami, Florida and Chaminade-Madonna Prep, Strong is the No. 210 overall recruit and No. 31 wide receiver. Having interest from multiple blue-blood schools means something, especially for a player ranked outside the top 200.
Strong was on campus during the last official visit weekend, and he committed less than 10 days later. Where things get interesting and worth keeping an eye on is with his future is his visits. Per Rivals, Strong has only visited one campus: the University of Florida. Having not been on any other campus could complicate things moving forward because he may not feel good enough about making such a big decision without a lot of information. Just keep that piece of info in the back of your mind.
Sumrall landed his first commitment in the 2028 class, and there are more to come.
