Florida Gators QB Situation Receives New Update

Heading into the 2026 college football season, the Florida Gators are expected to take a step forward under new head coach Jon Sumrall.

Over the last few years, the proud football program has lost more than it would like. Fans have grown frustrated with the product the Gators have put on the field. That led to the decision by Florida to fire former head coach Billy Napier.

Last season, the Gators finished the year with a 4-8 record. Sumrall has his work cut out for him to turn the program around quickly, but he has embraced that challenge immediately.

One of the big questions facing the team to start this season is the quarterback position.

D.J. Lagway opted to enter the NCAA transfer portal following the coaching change. He ended up taking his talents to the Baylor Bears.

Currently, Florida has a couple of signal callers vying for the starting job. The two most talked about names are sophomore transfer Aaron Philo and redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr. Most believe that Philo will win the starting job, but no decision has been made.

With that being said, Sumrall spoke out at SEC media day on Wednesday, July 22, with an update about the quarterback situation. In addition, he took a fun jab at LSU Tigers head coach as well.

"I don't have a timeline," Sumrall said. "My timeline, it may be five minutes before anybody finds out."

He continued on, making it clear that both quarterbacks are quality players who could win the job. Sumrall believes he has two signal callers capable of starting.

"We're not in a situation where one guy's like a great leader and the other guy's a dud," he said. " We got two awesome guys that are teammates… I'm not trying to make it like coach-speak. I view us as having two starters today."

Sumrall did reveal the main quality he is looking for from the two quarterbacks. He wants his starter to be consistent.

"To me, do you consistently do the right thing? Make good decisions?" he said. "It's not a one-hit wonder. Can't have one great day, and it's like, 'Hey, I had a great day. I'm the starter.' No, it's who stacks days. Both of them are doing a great job."

At this point in time, there is clearly no firm update for Gators fans. The quarterback battle remains wide open with both Philo and Jones having a chance to win the job.

Expect to hear more about the Florida quarterback battle in the coming weeks. For now, Sumrall is not ready to give a timeline for that decision.
