The Florida Gators will reportedly start backup quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. against Texas today. Starting Gators QB Aaron Philo will be a game-time decision.
Philo has been limited all week by a shoulder injury he suffered against South Carolina last Saturday in a 38-19 loss to the Gamecocks. This will be the first career start for Jones, who took most of the first team reps this week in practice.
The sophomore quarterback has appeared in five games this season, completing 23 of 29 passes for 252 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. His 79.3% completion rate has come mostly in second-half and reserve work.
Florida coach Jon Sumrall said this week that the staff has confidence in Jones if Philo is unavailable.
“Tramell got reps in practice. He’s going to continue to get reps,” Sumrall said. “I’ve said this publicly: I think Tramell can be our starting quarterback here, and we can win football games.”
