Florida HC Jon Sumrall on Red Zone Issues: 'Drove Me Crazy'

The Florida Gators have several things to clean up this week after the team’s most recent scrimmage on Saturday.
The scrimmage was a chance for new Gators head coach Jon Sumrall and his staff to see how the team had made progress since the early part of training camp. Florida has key position battles going on with the offensive line and at quarterback.
Sumrall noted the Gators need to see better play running the ball and at tackle on the offensive line. His secondary missed some tackles.
Florida also needs to be better in red zone situations on both sides of the ball. On Monday, Sumrall said it drove him crazy when the Gators offense scored two touchdowns on blown coverage.
“There were a couple of offensive things that stalled, and there were a couple of blown coverages too," Sumrall said, via gatornation.com. "You guys were there. Two of the passing touchdowns we gave up on Saturday, we just decided not to cover anybody. I can throw those.
"“It drove me crazy. It’s okay to get beat on a play, it’s not okay to just give them plays. We can’t beat ourselves. So Florida beat Florida on defense a couple times on Saturday, which was really frustrating.”
Those types of issues were a constant during the Billy Napier era. Sumrall is trying to nip those problems in the bud before they derail the season.
Sumrall argued that the better teams in college football will be more efficient in the red zone on both sides of the ball. That will be an area the team will focus on before taking on FAU in Week 1.
“It’s an area where I think when I go back and look at teams who are successful, they offensively score touchdowns and defensively keep them out of the end zone,” Sumrall said. “We got to do a better job there. Both sides.”
Overall, Sumrall said he liked the work the team put in during the scrimmage.
Still, it seems too early to tell how competitive the Gators will be when they come out of camp. There are still a few big question marks.
