Florida HC Jon Sumrall Still Appears Worried About Key Position Group

The Florida Gators had 15 practices during spring football for new head coach Jon Sumrall to lay the groundwork for the upcoming season.

While there's only so much he can do before Florida plays its first game in September, Sumrall will have over a month to work with his players during training camp. Those practices will be crucial for Florida to make a turnaround from a 4-8 season in 2025 and make a bowl game this year. 

Sumrall is going to need every minute to get his trenches ready.

During the SEC Media Days on Wednesday, Sumrall told reporters that the offensive line was the biggest "disappointment" he noticed when he first came to Gainesville. He didn't seem to suggest that the offensive line would be the bright spot on the team after the first 15 practices, but believes the unit is willing to be challenged this summer.

"The biggest disappointment (upon arriving at Florida) was the strength of our O-line was underwhelming," Sumrall said, via Brett McMurphy of On3. "They've embraced the challenge."

Embracing the challenge is one thing, being able to elevate their game to the next level is another. It's unclear if the offensive line can hold up for Sumrall, and that's a big worry given questions at the quarterback position with two inexperienced signal-callers, Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. fighting for the starting job.

Sumrall is hopeful that the skilled players on offense like running back Jadan Baugh and a talented trio of receivers can lead the group.

"None of them need to be Tim Tebow," Sumrall said, via ESPN. "They need to be somebody that just manages a game and operates the right way at the line scrimmage and doesn't turn the football over.

"We've got decent skill players around the quarterback position with Jadan Baugh and the receiver group."

Sumrall was uncertain about the defensive line coming into the spring, but felt better about the group heading into the summer. 

Florida will need to see consistency out of both the defensive line and offensive line to win games in the SEC this year. 

For now, it's all a challenge for Sumrall.
