Week 5 did not go quite the way the Gator Nation had hoped. Florida football traveled to face the Missouri Tigers for their homecoming game and came away with the first loss of the Jon Sumrall era — a brutal 45-17 defeat.
Following the gut-punch at Faurot Field, USA TODAY Sports writer Jordan Mendoza penned his "Flop 10" column for the weekend's college football action, with the Orange and Blue headlining the group after its embarrassing performance.
"The hangover has hit Florida. Ole Miss beat LSU in an emotional game and then fell flat against Florida. Now the Gators, coming off a statement win in Jon Sumrall's first season, got clocked against Missouri," Mendoza begins.
"After Florida tied it up 10-10 in the second half, the Tigers went on to score 35 unanswered points in a romp of a Gators defense that is looking more suspicious by the week. But the real story was Florida's run game getting silenced. Entering the day, Jadan Baugh's 600 rushing yards were second-best in FBS, leading the 11th-best running offense in the country," he continues.
"Against Missouri? Baugh had just 13 yards on 12 carries, and 12 of those yards came on one play. Florida finished with just 42 yards on the ground in the blowout loss."
Mendoza also offers some words of caution to Mizzou, as the SEC hangover story continues this season.
"May be a warning to Missouri: Don't get too tipsy and be hungover against Texas A&M next week."
As for Florida, the Gators will get a chance to recover this weekend in the Swamp, where it hosts the South Carolina Gamecocks for their own homecoming game.
