Florida head coach Jon Sumrall is bringing Johnathan Galante, a 2025 Broyles Award nominee, to Gainesville as the Gators’ new special teams coordinator, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz.

Galante has spent the last four seasons as a special teams coordinator, serving three years at Marshall before joining Sumrall at Tulane. Before that, he was a special teams analyst at Alabama (2019-2021) and a special teams graduate assistant at Virginia Tech (2017-2018).

In his first season as special teams coordinator with Marshall, the Thundering Herd finished with a pair of blocked kicks and a blocked punt, which Dainsus Miller recovered for a touchdown. In 2023, Marshall’s kick return unit ranked third nationally with 26.3 yards per return. In 2024, the return unit ranked 15th with 25.2 yards per return. Ian Foster led the Sun Belt Conference, averaging 32.6 yards on 16 returns.

With Tulne, Galante coached the American Conference Special Teams Player of the Year, kicker Patrick Durkin, who hit 25 of 28 field goals, including four from beyond 50 yards. Punter Alex Clark also had a standout year, leading the conference with a 46.9-yard average on 45 punts. Both players earned All-Conference First Team honors, with return specialist TJ Smith and long snapper Jason Arredondo making the Third Team.
