The Florida Gators quarterback battle between Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. is one of the more important competitions on the roster this summer, and one signal-caller appeared to have a better scrimmage over the weekend.
Gators head coach Jon Sumrall was eager to see what his team looked like during the scrimmage on Saturday.
Per Pete Nakos of On3, Philo received most of the reps with the first-team offense, but had ups and downs during the practice. Jones had the better outing. Still, it appears like Florida trusts Philo because of his ties to offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner.
When speaking to reporters on Monday, Sumrall noted that there should have been three more interceptions from the quarterback group as a whole on Saturday other than cornerback Cormani McClain's pick of Philo. Sumrall wants to see his defense make the interceptions moving forward.
Sumrall noted that Jones needs to do better operating the offense pre-snap. He suggested the QB1 job has not yet been given to Philo despite the optics at Saturday's scrimmage.
“They’ve both earned what they are getting,” Sumrall said, via gatorcountry.com. “I think Tramell’s grown a ton. The biggest growth he’s got to continue to make is operating from the line of scrimmage, with shifts, motions, those kinds of things. We can’t have a motion called and not bring a guy in motion. But he’s making plays.
"He’s very comfortable in the pocket, he’s got great energy, he’s got good touch on the football. When things are right, they’re right. He’s got a bright future. I’m fired up about him. I really am. I know everybody thinks Philo is the starter because he came with Buster and all this. And yeah, he had a head start. Both guys are doing some good things and we need both of them to get ready.”
Sumrall is playing the competition close to his chest, but it appears Philo has the inside track to win the job. With that being said, he'll need to limit turnovers if he wants to keep it training camp and in the regular season.
