The Florida Gators are set to start training camp with exceeded expectations under new head coach Jon Sumrall despite finishing with a 4-8 record in 2025.
Sumrall and his staff brought intensity to the program this season that had been lacking in recent years, and might have been absent in Gainesville since Urban Meyer stepped down after the 2010 campaign.
Despite the early coaching hiring cycle being over before spring practice, Sumrall apparently hasn't given up on finding leaders who can help the Gators this fall, as Florida is set to make a new hire for special teams.
Per Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, the Gators are set to hire Greg McMahon as a special teams analyst.
Florida is set to hire longtime special teams coach Greg McMahon as a special teams analyst, sources tell CBS Sports," Zenitz posted on X.
"Has been an NFL special teams coordinator with the Saints and a college special teams coordinator for teams like LSU and Tulane."
McMahon worked with Sumrall as the special teams coordinator for Tulane in 2024.
Earlier this year, Florida AD Scott Stricklin said Sumrall's vision for the coaching staff was one of the reasons he hired the highly sought-after coach.
“From the first time we talked to Jon, he said, ‘I want to get Buster Faulkner as offensive coordinator from Georgia Tech and Brad White as our defensive coordinator.’ He basically put together the staff that he said was going to put together," Stricklin said on the Paul Finebaum show in May.
"To me, those coaches who can do that are an early indication that, No. 1, they are in touch with what the reality of their ability to attract talent is. And then, No. 2, they’ve identified really good coaches. Those are really high-level coaches.”
McMahon appears to be a great hire for the Gators before the regular season. With NFL and college experience, he can help special teams coordinator Johnathan Galante develop players and a game plan for the regular season.
The Gators have questions at positions on offense and defense, and the team could use a boost on special teams to help flip games in their favor.
