The Thomas Castellanos-Florida State football experiment is over. Although the Seminoles had already moved on to Ashton Daniels, the split is now official following an eventful Friday afternoon. Castellanos, who sued the NCAA earlier in August, has secured a temporary injunction for a fifth year of eligibility and will enter the transfer portal, according to On3.

The Kentucky judge who granted the 22-year-old quarterback this formal court order is opening the transfer portal for one week, per On3’s Pete Nakos. Rosters are mostly finalized with the new college football season set to begin next week, but an athletic and experienced signal-caller who has played under accomplished coaches is bound to attract interest.

Castellanos could be a fine option for a talented program that still has questions to answer under center. It is also hard to overstate the importance of a competent backup. Teams would not just be getting a new player, though. They must also factor in the extra room needed to house his big personality.

Castellanos famously called his shot against Alabama ahead of the 2025 season opener, rushing for 78 yards and a touchdown in a 31-17 upset victory versus the Crimson Tide. That was the highlight of his Florida State tenure. The 5-foot-10 QB completed 58.3 percent of his passes for 2,760 yards and 15 TDs while throwing nine interceptions and rushing for 557 yards and nine scores. He can daze defenses with his legs, but his passing game remains inconsistent.

A fresh start awaits. Thomas Castellanos, who played his freshman campaign at UCF and spent two years at Boston College, will try to finish his college career strong after going undrafted in April. He should have little problem selling himself to potential suitors.
