Florida State Punter Daniel Hughes: College Football’s Most Interesting Man

Florida State punter Daniel Hughes has become one of the most recognizable personalities in college football, and he went viral again Saturday.
The 28-year-old Australian’s bleached hair, mustache, tattoos, and mullet immediately caught social media’s attention during Florida State’s game. Fans quickly compared Hughes to everyone from Joe Exotic and Joe Dirt to Uncle Rico, and another popular nickname is “Machine Punt Kelly.”

Hughes has fully embraced the jokes. After a particularly wild post about his appearance went viral, Hughes made a video laughing about the comparisons and said he gets called “Joe Dirt, Joe Exotic, some other things, too.”
That willingness to laugh at himself has helped make Hughes a social-media sensation. But his appearance is only one small part of what makes his story so unusual.
From Construction Company Owner to College Punter
Hughes dropped out of high school in Australia at 16 and began a carpentry apprenticeship. By 19, he was qualified and had started his own construction company.
He eventually reached a point where he was financially comfortable and had even helped support his mother. But Hughes still wanted to become a professional athlete.

In his mid 20s, Hughes made the enormous decision to sell his company and pursue American football full time.
“I was not happy with what I was doing,” Hughes told Yahoo Sports. “Money doesn’t buy happiness, and I always want to be a professional athlete.”
Before making the transition, Hughes played Australian Rules Football for the Northern Bullants in 2021 and 2022. He then worked with ProKick Australia to develop his skills as an American football punter.
The Long Road to Florida State
Hughes eventually made his way to the United States and began his college football career at City College of San Francisco in 2024.

He played 10 games, averaging 37.3 yards on 49 punts, before transferring to New Mexico.
His one season with the Lobos changed everything. In 2025, Hughes averaged 45.4 yards per punt, placed 13 punts inside the 20-yard line, and had 13 punts travel at least 50 yards. He was named an honorable mention All-Mountain West selection and became a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award.

Then came the opportunity Hughes had been chasing. Florida State. Hughes transferred to FSU in January and quickly became one of the Seminoles’ biggest personalities.
Going Viral
Hughes’ social-media presence really took off during spring and summer. On his accounts, you’ll find a variety of fun and engaging videos, workouts, fishing trips, cooking, day-in-the-life moments, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of Florida State. He has gathered a following of about 80,000 people across TikTok and Instagram.
What’s really inspiring is that Hughes, who once ran a construction company in Australia, is now living his dream as a college football player because he chose to bet on himself and pursue his passion for sports.
Now, he’s not only an FSU punter and aspiring NFL player but also one of the sport’s biggest social-media personalities. And if Saturday’s game was any indication, he’s likely to keep gaining fame and going viral.
