Florida State football’s 2026 season carries implications well beyond its final record, with the direction of the program and Mike Norvell’s future among the questions attracting national attention.
The Ringer's Joel Anderson ranked “The Future of Florida State” No. 15 among his 26 biggest storylines entering the college football season, highlighting the pressure surrounding a program that has struggled to regain its footing since its unbeaten 2023 regular season.
Anderson traced Florida State’s downturn back to Jordan Travis’ season-ending leg injury against North Alabama in November 2023. The Seminoles completed an undefeated regular season and won the ACC Championship without Travis, but were left out of the College Football Playoff before losing to the Georgia Bulldogs in the Orange Bowl. Since the North Alabama victory, The Ringer noted that FSU has gone 9-18, a stretch that includes consecutive losing seasons in 2024 and 2025.
That recent history has placed considerable attention on Norvell entering his seventh season in Tallahassee. Anderson wrote that another unsuccessful campaign could bring an end to Norvell’s tenure, particularly after Florida State reported a record fundraising year.
The Ringer also expressed skepticism that the current roster is equipped for an immediate return to national contention. Anderson pointed to Auburn Tigers transfer Ashton Daniels as one of the central variables at quarterback while questioning whether Florida State has enough overall talent and depth to seriously challenge for a College Football Playoff berth.
The schedule only adds to the uncertainty.
Florida State hosts SMU in its ACC opener before traveling to face the Alabama Crimson Tide following a bye week. October brings a demanding conference stretch that includes road games against the Louisville Cardinals and Miami Hurricanes before the Clemson Tigers visit Doak Campbell Stadium on Oct. 31. Anderson concluded that even reaching bowl eligibility can not be considered automatic for the Seminoles.
The stakes represent a dramatic shift from where Florida State stood three seasons ago. Norvell had the Seminoles positioned among the sport’s national contenders in 2023, but back-to-back losing campaigns have turned 2026 into a season centered as much on the program’s long-term direction as its week-to-week results.
For Florida State, that conversation can begin changing immediately. The Seminoles open the season Saturday against New Mexico State, beginning a 12-game opportunity to determine whether 2026 marks the start of another turnaround or another major transition in Tallahassee.
