Florida's Jon Sumrall Has Brutal Response if Family Cheers for Auburn

Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has been itching to start play in the SEC.

He made comments critical of his team's play in a 52-3 win over Campbell on Saturday, nothing that Florida can't commit the same penalties they did against the Fighting Camels and hope to win many games in conference play. 

In addition to penalties, Florida had two turnovers. Sumrall wasn't fully appreciative of the effort the Gators gave. 

Sumrall wants his guys to make a big leap this week before going on the road to face Auburn.

During his news conference on Monday, Sumrall was asked what he thought of family who had ties to Auburn potentially rooting for a Tigers' win on Saturday. Sumrall basically said he'd disown whoever didn't pull for Florida to win.

"If I do, they're no family to me … Florida pays my mortgage," Sumrall said, via Max Bernstein of Alligator Sports. "Any family that's pulling against us ain't my family."

Sumrall's family knows where he stands. Saturday's contest between Florida and Auburn will be critical. Both teams have a chance to gain early momentum in the SEC with a win.

During SEC media days, he said he chose Florida in part because of its passionate fan base. He cares that people are cheering him on in Gainesville.

"To Gator Nation, part of why I chose Florida, as a head coach, you become in that role because they have to choose you, but you have to choose them back," Sumrall said. 

"Part of why I chose Florida was because of the passion of our fan base. Football matters at the University of Florida. Our fan base cares deeply. We have 18 straight sell-outs through maybe not ideal on-the-field results."

The Gators will face their first Power 4 competition when they play the Tigers on Saturday. The contest will be a test for Sumrall to see how much progress his team has made since he took over before spring football.

A win would ignite the fan base and maybe stir up College Football Playoff chatter before ending the month at home against Ole Miss. 

A loss would send Florida back to reality.
