Football conferences are stupid and apparently only Notre Dame understands this

The college football season, postseason, offseason, and preseason is filled with many wonderful conversations — but just about any talk concerning conferences is stupid. The start of the conversations might be in good faith (might be), but they eventually devolve into nonsense. The Great CFB Conference Realignment of the 2010’s was one of the more daring periods in college football history, and those idiotic moves (mostly made due to cable television footprints which is laughable in 2026) have diluted and polluted the sport more than any other change.

Notre Dame has weathered this storm to great advantage, and all the while, many of us have wondered why more don’t go independent. Like why not? None of it makes sense anymore, so why do it? The stranglehold the conference mentality has on fans and media members might be too strong.

Take this clip from Ari Wasserman and Andy Staples for example.

Once presented with the simple argument that conferences are stupid, they both agree with the premise — but then completely lose the plot. At the end of the clip, Ari talks about a conference draft because they just don’t get it.

Conferences are stupid, and even more dumb as we take a rocket ship toward a 24 team playoff. They don’t need to exist for football, and the sport would be better off without them. Without ANY of them. Andy and Ari understood, but then consciously or subconsciously steered right into the same nonsense.

This is America. We’re all better than this. Independence forever.
