Oct. 14—NEW LONDON — Dylan Hoffarth and Albany's rushing attack prevailed in a Mid West Central Black District football game Wednesday night.
Hoffarth ran for three touchdowns to lead the Huskies to a 34-28 victory over New London-Spicer at Pederson Field.
It is an Albany victory that comes as a Section 6AAA preview. The Huskies (6-1) are unbeaten in section games and rank ninth in Class AAA. NLS (4-3) has a 2-1 section record. Then there is Melrose, which has a 2-1 section record and improved to 6-1 after it beat Little Falls 43-36.
Hoffarth, a senior running back who rushed for 157 yards on 17 carries, found the end zone on runs that went for three, five and 69 yards. Two of his three scores came in the second half.
His scores helped the Huskies break through late in a game that was tied 21-21 at halftime.
Albany's other two scores came on runs by Judah Allen and Charlie Simon. Allen opened up the scoring with a 36-yard touchdown. Simon scored on a trick play when Emmett Rushmeyer faked his hold on a field goal and handed the ball off to Simon for a 14-yard score on 4th-and-goal.
Hoffarth, Rushmeyer and Allen helped the Huskies amount 328 rushing yards on 40 attempts.
NLS' offense, led by junior quarterback Ethan Nelson, thrived through the air.
Nelson completed 18 of 29 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns. His top targets were senior wide receivers Brecken Westby, who caught 10 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns, and Weston Steele, who tallied 125 yards and one touchdown on seven catches.
Westby's second touchdown, which went for 55 yards on 4th and 27 with 5 minutes, 2 seconds remaining in the game, cut the Wildcats' deficit to 34-28.
NLS did not get another possession the remainder of the contest.
Albany kneeled the ball down late in victory formation to seal its win in NLS territory. The Huskies rushed for 328 yards and passed for 103 more.
The Wildcats play host to Morris/Chokio-Alberta for the regular-season finale at 7 p.m. Wednesday at New London.
Senior running back Anthony Taylor rushed 21 times for 206 yards and four touchdowns and also caught one pass for a 55-yard score to beat the Mainstreeters at Litchfield.
