The Birmingham Stallions announced Thursday that McCarron has been named the franchise’s new head coach ahead of the 2026 season.
The move comes just days after Skip Holtz stepped down from the position, closing the book on an era that began with the Stallions’ inaugural season in 2022.
Holtz leaves behind a remarkable legacy in Birmingham. Under his leadership, the Stallions became the standard of spring football, winning three consecutive championships from 2022 through 2024. The team remained a contender last season, advancing to the conference finals before falling to the Michigan Panthers. Now, the organization is turning to a familiar name with championship pedigree to maintain that winning culture.
McCarron’s football résumé needs little introduction in the state of Alabama.
From 2010 to 2013, he carved out a legendary career at Alabama, serving as the starting quarterback for back-to-back national championship teams in 2011 and 2012. His calm demeanor, command of the offense, and ability to thrive in the biggest moments helped define one of the most dominant stretches in Crimson Tide history.
During his time in Tuscaloosa, McCarron threw for 9,019 yards, 77 touchdowns, and just 15 interceptions. Known for his poise, leadership, and championship mentality, he became a fan favorite and a symbol of Alabama’s dominance during the early 2010s.
After college, McCarron was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft with the 164th overall pick. His professional career included time in the NFL before a return to spring football, most recently playing in the UFL with the St. Louis Battlehawks during the 2024 season.
Now, McCarron steps into his first head coaching role, taking over one of the league’s premier franchises. With his deep understanding of the game and firsthand experience winning championships, expectations will be high in Birmingham.
The next chapter begins soon, as the 2026 UFL regular season is set to kick off on March 27, with McCarron leading the Stallions into a new era.
