Former Clemson Star Gets Honest About Team's Current QB Room

With the 2026 college football season coming up quickly, the Clemson Tigers are hopeful of beginning to turn the program back into a National Championship contender. However, there is one major question surrounding Dabo Swinney's football team.

At this point in time, no one knows what to expect from Clemson's quarterback room.

If the season were to begin right now, the expectation is that Christopher Vizzina would be the starting quarterback. Behind him, the Tigers are expected to have freshman Tait Reynolds as the primary backup.

For Tajh Boyd, the team's current quarterbacks coach and a former star quarterback for Clemson, the room is actually looking very good. He isn't buying into the national media headlines about concern surrounding the position.

During the Tigers' media day, Boyd opened up honestly with his thoughts on the quarterback situation.

“One of the things that I love so much about the room right now is how they complement each other,” Boyd said.

“I think the uniqueness of it all is being able to coach it and have played it.”

Boyd did make it clear that regardless of who the starting quarterback ends up being, the other signal callers on the roster need to be taking mental reps and paying attention.

“So, one guy’s out there; we should all be taking notes,” Boyd said. “We should all be taking the mental reps. We should all be learning; when we come back to the sideline, we’ll talk about it and address it collectively.”

In addition, Boyd opened up with his early thoughts on Vizzina.

“He’s grabbed it by the horns; he really has,” Boyd said. “Super proud of CV, and it’s a hard thing, you know what I mean? You’ve been sitting, waiting in the wings for a little while now, and he has had opportunities, like a lot of guys during the offseason, to think about what could happen.”

He also praised Reynolds.

“Tait is just hyper-competitive,” he said. “Obviously, his physique looks one way, but his mental matches, and he’s a guy who just loves to compete, loves everything about it, and so you love that.”

Swinney has also been very open about his praise for Reynolds.

While no final decision has been made about the starting job, it would be a surprise if Vizzina didn't open the year under center. He has played very sparingly at Clemson, but has completed 61 percent of his career pass attempts for 596 yards, four touchdowns, and one interceptions in two years. He has also chipped in with 109 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Only time will tell what the 2026 has in store for the Tigers at quarterback. Despite the outside concern, Boyd is clearly happy with what he has seen from his top two quarterbacks so far.
