Former Florida football quarterback DJ Lagway is heading back to his home state.
According to a report from On3's Hayes Fawcett, Lagway has committed to play for Baylor to play in the Big 12 under head coach Dave Aranda.
The decision officially closes the career for Lagway with the Florida Gators. It began with promise as Lagway went 6-1 as a starter as a true freshman in 2024, completing 12 passes of 40 yards or more while throwing for 1,915 yards with 12 TDs to 9 interceptions.
But offseason shoulder, core and calf injuries limited Lagway's offseason development between his freshman and sophomore year. The results showed on the field. Lagway made all 12 starts as a sophomore but failed to make significant progress as Florida finished the season 4-8. Lagway threw five interceptions during a 20-10 loss at LSU on Sept. 13 and was benched after throwing three interceptions during a 38-7 loss a Kentucky on Nov. 8. For the season, Lagway threw for 2,264 yards with 16 TDs and 14 interceptions.
In going to the school located in Waco, Texas, the 6-foot-3, 247-pound Lagway will return to his home state and play at his father's alma mater. Lagway earned Texas and Gatorade National Player of the Year Honors in 2023 after passing for 8,392 yards and 100 touchdowns, while rushing for 2,196 yards in 293 carries with 29 TDs in his high school career at Willis HS in Willis, Texas.
Lagway's dual-threat ability in high school didn't translate to the college level at UF, as he rushed for just 1 TD in two seasons at UF.
Following UF's season-ending 40-21 win over rival Florida State, Lagway initially said he wanted to return to UF for his junior season. But Lagway announced he was entering the transfer portal on Dec. 15. On a recent podcast, new Florida football coach Jon Sumrall claimed he didn't run Lagway off but said he laid out expectations for what he was looking for from the position of toughness and competing.
Florida has signed Georgia Tech quarterback Aaron Philo out of the portal, who will compete with returning sophomore quarterback Tramell Jones Jr., redshirt junior quarterback Aidan Warner and incoming freshman quarterback Will Griffin for the starting job. Philo played at Georgia Tech under new UF offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner.
