A former Georgia Bulldogs assistant that was not exactly a fan favorite is officially the UAB Blazers' newest defensive coordinator. The Blazers have hired former Georgia assistant head coach Todd Grantham to be their defensive coordinator.
Grantham is coming off a rough one-year stint as defensive coordinator of the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Some of that had to do with the modern game passing Mike Gundy, but the Cowboys finished 126th out of all 136 FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) teams in points per game (33.3). They went 1-11, including 0-9 in the conference. His defensive line didn't perform well either, ranking 91st in sack percentage (5.29%).
However, Grantham's defense played really well down the stretch. They held their last three opponents (Kansas State, UCF, Iowa State) to just 51 points combined, with the defensive line generating six sacks during that time frame for a 7.28% sack percentage.
The Blazers also had a rough defense last year, allowing 38.2 points per game, which was second to last among FBS teams. As a result, UAB fired head coach Trent Dilfer and made interim coach Alex Mortensen the new boss. With Grantham and Mortensen working together as analysts at Alabama in 2022, Mortensen brought in Grantham for continuity and leadership.
Grantham was with Georgia from 2010 to 2013 as the assistant head coach, assistant defensive coordinator, and linebackers coach. He's had stops in college football with Virginia Tech (1990-95), Michigan State (1996-98), Georgia, Louisville (2014-16), Mississippi State (2017), Florida (2018-21), Alabama (2022), and Oklahoma State. He's also had tenures in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts (1999-2001), Houston Texans (2002-04), Cleveland Browns (2005-07), Dallas Cowboys (2008-09), and New Orleans Saints (2023-24).
He faced a lot of criticism during his time at Florida and with the New Orleans Saints, where legendary defensive end Cameron Jordan had a highly publicized beef with him. Hopefully Grantham can stave off criticism at UAB and make a positive impact at his new school.

Not surprising considering New Orleans Saints DE Cam Jordan called Todd Grantham βprobablyβ the worst defensive line coach heβs ever had.
