MADISON – At this time of year, situations change quickly.
On New Year’s Eve, Abu Sama III announced his departure from Iowa State after three seasons. Three days later, the Wisconsin Badgers had him in the fold.
On Jan. 3, 247sports reported the 5-foot-11, 210-pound running back committed to the Badgers. He comes to UW with 38 games of experience, 1,933 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns.
He has one year of eligibility remaining.
Sama's commitment marked the third time in three days the Badgers were able to pounce on a former Cyclones player or one of their recruits.
Saturday, UW received a commitment from safety Carson Van Dinter. On New Year’s Day, Kash Brock committed. A receiver in the 2026 class, he signed with Iowa State but was released from his commitment after Matt Campbell left to become the head coach at Penn State.
Sama ranked second on the Cyclones in rushing attempts (140), yards (732) and ranked third with five touchdowns. His best performance came was a 24-carry, 177-yard performance in a 24-17 loss to Colorado Oct. 11.
