A former LSU football assistant coach is moving up in the NFL. Daronte Jones is set to become the Washington Commanders' defensive coordinator, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Jones joins Washington after serving as Minnesota's secondary coach and defensive passing game coordinator.
Jones spent one year at LSU, working as the Tigers' defensive coordinator in 2021. Jones was already an NFL veteran when he arrived in Baton Rouge, after stints on the Dolphins, Bengals, and Vikings' coaching staffs.
2021 was a disappointing year for LSU, but Jones' defense steadily improved over the course of the season. The Tigers held Alabama to 20 points and nearly pulled the upset before limiting Arkansas to 16 the next week. LSU finished the regular season with wins over ULM and Texas A&M.
After leaving LSU, Jones went back to the NFL and rejoined the Vikings. Minnesota's defense has been impressive with DC Brian Flores leading the way, but Jones deserves plenty of credit, too. Now Jones gets to run his own unit, working under head coach Dan Quinn in Washington.
