Dec. 23—Le ROY, Minn. — After one season at NCAA Division II power Minnesota State University, Mankato, a former LeRoy-Ostrander/Lyle-Pacelli star and a former Minnesota Mr. Football award winner has found a new college home.
Camden Hungerholt, who quarterbacked the L-O/LP Cardinals to a 12-1 record and the 9-Player state semifinals in 2024, will now play college football at Upper Iowa University, a Division II program in Fayette, Iowa, approximately 80 miles south of Le Roy.
Hungerholt announced his decision on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, Dec. 22.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Hungerholt converted to wide receiver at Minnesota State, where he redshirted this season. The Mavericks went 10-4 overall and reached the Division II national quarterfinals, where they fell to No. 1-ranked Ferris State University (Big Rapids, Mich.).
The former multi-sport star at Le Roy-Ostrander became the first 9-Player athlete ever to win the Mr. Football award, when he was named the winner as a senior in the fall of 2024. He recorded 5,267 all-purpose yards. He recorded 147 career touchdowns and 11,964 career all-purpose yards, including 6,573 career rushing yards.
Hungerholt, also a standout defensive back, was named to the 2024 Minnesota North-South All-Star Game, as well as to the Minnesota Vikings All-State Team. He's a two-time All-State player and was named the 2024 Post Bulletin All-Area Player of the Year.
"Hopefully this can be a trailblazer for those smaller school guys that their dreams are achievable," Hungerholt told the Post Bulletin in December of 2024. "I never thought I could do this, but I just put my mind to it. I grinded every day and just to get to where I am, it's crazy."
Upper Iowa went 9-3 this past season and won the Albanese Candy Bowl, a bowl game for top Division II teams that don't reach the national tournament.
Hungerholt will join fellow Le Roy-Ostrander grad Gavin Sweeney at Upper Iowa. Sweeney will be a senior defensive lineman for the Peacocks next season. He recorded 26 total tackles and two quarterback sacks this season.
