Former Nebraska quarterback commit Pop Watson leads UMass over Rutgers

A former Nebraska quarterback commit was part of a major upset on Thursday. William 'Pop' Watson led the UMass Minutemen over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 37-21 in Piscataway, NJ.

Watson went 19-of-22 for 197 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. He also ran six times for a total of 40 yards with a long of 15.

The victory ended the longest current losing streak in the FBS. UMass' last win over an FBS school was against Army in 2023.

Watson was a member of the 2023 recruiting class and was committed to Nebraska at one point. He decommitted from the Huskers just days before signing day and signed with the Virginia Tech Hokies.

He spent three years in Blacksburg before transferring to UMass for the 2026 season. The Minutemen return home to face Sacred Heart on September 12, with kickoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT.
