Former Notre Dame football quarterback Ron Powlus has a new role and title within the school’s athletic department.
Powlus, who worked as Notre Dame football’s director of player development, was promoted to the athletic department’s Chief Operating Officer, a first-of-its-kind role in South Bend.
“The college athletics ecosystem is changing at the fastest rate in its history and this reorganization will give us the best opportunity to continue to provide an authentic and rewarding Notre Dame student-athlete experience,” Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua said in a news release. “Moving Ron into the COO role will bring the amazing leadership that he’s consistently exhibited with our football program to the entire athletic department. I couldn’t be more excited to see how Ron leads his new divisions and how our new executive leadership team coalesces and moves us into the future at full speed.”
Powlus will maintain day-to-day oversight of the football program and the department’s NIL division, but will add sports performance, internal operations, equipment and facilities to his role.
A four-year starter for the Irish (1994-97) and Sports Illustrated cover boy, Powlus set 20 school records and started all 44 games he played. He finished his career with 7,602 passing yards and 52 touchdowns and led the Irish to the 1995 Fiesta Bowl and 1997 Independence Bowl.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue serving this great university and athletic department,” Powlus said in a news release. “Notre Dame is a special place for me and my family and I’m energized to work with such outstanding student-athletes and staff who are joined in our shared mission of excellence and to be a force for good in the world.”
After a brief NFL career, Powlus spent five years at Notre Dame, as director of personnel development and then quarterbacks coach through 2010. He coached quarterbacks at Akron (2010-11) and then Kansas (2012-14) before returning to South Bend.
