In the world of college recruiting, the old saying applies: “You win some, you lose some.” On Monday, Ohio State football had its share of both. While securing several high-profile players from the transfer portal, one current Buckeye announced he has found a new home. Defensive tackle Jarquez Carter has committed to the Miami Hurricanes.

This isn’t necessarily the news Ohio State fans hoped to hear, especially after getting beaten in the trenches against Miami in the Cotton Bowl. However, as a Florida native, it is closer to home for the former four-star prospect. Carter ranked as a top-200 player and the No. 18 defensive lineman in the 2025 cycle according to 247Sports composite rankings. Despite being a true freshman, Carter saw action in seven games this past season, recording one tackle.

Carter is the third Buckeye defensive tackle to take his talents elsewhere, joining Eric Mensah (Virginia Tech) and Maxwell Roy (UCLA). The losses are significant, but Ohio State has replaced those players with more experienced players who have proven production, as evidenced by the commitments of James Smith (Alabama) and John Walker (UCF).

With just a few days left with the portal window open, Buckeye Nation is hopeful the dust has settled on players leaving. Ohio State can still sign players after January 16, but players cannot enter the portal after that date.
