As the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic gets ready to kick off, a former Ohio State quarterback has made some news. Devin Brown, who left Columbus for California Berkley, has said he will once again enter the transfer portal after just one year with the Golden Bears.
Brown, who was with the Buckeyes for three years, left after Ohio State finished its championship run in January 2025. He served as the backup to starter Will Howard, but saw a limited path to playing time with Julian Sayin ready to take the reins.
Leaving for Cal, Brown felt there was an opportunity for significant playing time with Fernando Mendoza leaving for Indiana. However, four-star freshman Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who was the No. 7 overall quarterback in the 2025 class, won the job before the season even started. Sagapolutele had originally enrolled at Oregon in December of 2024 but asked for his release soon after and headed south to California. So Brown spent another season as a backup, seeing mop-up action in just five games, completing four of seven passes for 48 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Where Brown lands next is anyone’s guess, but it has to be assumed that a Group of Five school is the most logical at this point. He’ll have one year of eligibility left as he tries to salvage what’s left of his collegiate career.
