With how strong the Oregon Ducks‘ roster is along the defensive line, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see players depart and eventually excel at other big-time programs. That may be the case for former Ducks defensive lineman Tionne Gray, who entered the transfer portal on Jan. 11 and has now committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Gray was a vital piece of the 2025 team, as he served in a rotational role and played in 13 games, registering 13 tackles and two tackles for loss.

The 6-foot-6, 336-pounder is a former 4-star recruit who was rated as the No. 422 player and No. 46 DT in the 2024 class. As a transfer, he was also rated as a four-star and ranked as the No. 17 player and No. 3 defensive lineman, representing a major commitment for the Fighting Irish.

There’s no doubt that Gray is a starting-caliber player at Power 4 level, as he was expected to step into a featured role if either Bear Alexander or A’Mauri Washington departed for the NFL.

Unfortunately for Gray, that wasn’t the case. Both Alexander and Washington decided to pass up on going pro for one more season with the Ducks. Alongside them, edge rushers Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti also decided to return, sparking much of Oregon’s defensive line depth to hit the portal.

While it may hurt to see Gray succeed at Notre Dame knowing that he once had on a Duck jersey, this is just the price the Oregon program has to pay with having so many starting-caliber players on the roster at the same time.
