After being fired by the Las Vegas Raiders just 11 games into his tenure as the offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly had been floated as a possible candidate for the same position with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets‘, attempting to reemerge in the college coaching ranks.

Though he wasn’t hired by Georgia Tech, the former Oregon Ducks head coach was hired on Tuesday as the Northwestern Wildcats‘ offensive coordinator. Kelly makes a return to the Big Ten after coaching the Ohio State Buckeyes offense to the 2024 national title, leading to his hiring with the Raiders.

His 2025 didn’t go as planned, as things quickly went south with Las Vegas. At the time of Kelly’s firing, the Raiders ranked tied for last in the NFL in scoring with the team holding just a 2-9 record.

He’d been lauded for his rushing attack with the Buckeyes featuring standouts TreVeyon Henderon and Quinshon Judkins, but he failed to get the most out of Raiders rookie running back Ashton Jeanty, the team’s No. 6 pick in the 2024 draft.

The former Ducks head man was also the head coach with the UCLA Bruins, now also in the Big Ten along with Oregon, for multiple seasons before being hired at Ohio State.

The Ducks and Wildcats are scheduled to play in 2026 in Eugene, giving Duck fans the opportunity to see Kelly once again at Autzen Stadium.
