Former OU football coach Bob Stoops retires from UFL’s Dallas Renegades
Bob Stoops is officially calling it a career — again.
The former OU football coach announced his retirement from coaching on Monday, stepping down from the United Football League’s Dallas Renegades after four seasons.
“After much thought and reflection, I’ve made the decision to retire from coaching and step away from the game of football,” Stoops said in a statement. “Coaching has been one of the greatest honors of my life, and closing this chapter comes with lots of gratitude.
“I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the United Football League, the Dallas Renegades, and every player, coach, and staff member who shared in this journey. I’m especially grateful to Russ Brandon, and to the entire ownership and leadership team—Mike Repole and Impact Capital, RedBird Capital, Dany Garcia, Dwayne Johnson, FOX, and ESPN. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of a league that will always be special to me.
“To the fans—you are the heartbeat of this sport. Your passion, energy, and unwavering support have meant the world to me. Coaching for you has been one of the greatest joys of my career.
“While it’s the right time for me to step aside, be with family, and embrace the next chapter of my life, I do so with deep appreciation and full confidence in the bright future of the UFL. This league is on the rise, and I’ll remain its biggest supporter.
“Thank you for allowing me to be part of this incredible game for so many years.”
Stoops led Dallas to the XFL championship in 2023.
As a head coach with Dallas and at OU, Stoops was 207-69 overall. He was 191-48 leading the Sooners for 18 seasons, winning 10 Big 12 titles and a BCS national championship.
Stoops did briefly come out of retirement at the collegiate level to lead OU in the 2021 Alamo Bowl as the interim coach following the departure of Lincoln Riley to USC.
The United Football League wants to congratulate head coach Bob Stoops for one of the most accomplished careers in all of head football coaching,” UFL President & CEO Russ Brandon said in a release. “Speaking on behalf of our owners, league executives, coaches and players, we are grateful to Bob for his help in building the foundation of our League and Spring Football.
“Bob is a true legend in the game of football but an even better person. It has been truly an honor to work with him and learn from one of the greatest our game has ever known. We wish Bob, his wife Carol and the entire Stoops family the absolute best in his retirement.”
OSU wrestling routs West Virginia
Fifth-ranked Oklahoma State routed No. 17 West Virginia 34-3 at Hope Coliseum in Morgantown, West Virginia, on Sunday in a Big 12 wrestling match.
The Cowboys (7-1, 3-0) won nine of 10 bouts, with Landon Robideau (157), Alex Facundo (174) and Konner Doucet (HWT) collecting bonus points.
In a rematch of last year’s 125-pound Big 12 championship bout, Troy Spratley avenged his title loss to Jett Strickenberger with a 6-2 win. Spratley opened the match with a takedown in the first and rode out Strickenberger to end the period. The Cowboy 125-pounder followed it up with a reversal in the second that was too much to overcome for Strickenberger.
Fresh off a 174-pound title at the Cougar Clash, Facundo continued his dominant tear with a 20-5 technical fall victory over Leo Contino. Heavyweight Doucet added another impressive win to his record, pinning WVU’s Wilson Spires in the opening period.
Cowboys add former Sooner to coaching staff
The Oklahoma State football coaching staff has a dash of Bedlam spice.
Former OU cornerback Julian Wilson has been hired as the Cowboys’ defensive backs coach, according to a report by CBS Sports on Monday afternoon.
Wilson returns to his home state after one season coaching defensive backs under Eric Morris at North Texas.
Wilson’s coaching journey has occurred alongside new OSU defensive coordinator Skyler Cassity since 2022, when both were hired by Keith Patterson at Abilene Christian.
Cassity and Wilson were there for two years, then moved to Sam Houston in 2024 and North Texas this year. At different times, both had spent multiple years as graduate assistants at Texas Tech when Patterson was the defensive coordinator.
Wilson graduated from Southmoore High School in 2010 and appeared in 48 career games during his OU career.
Vikings put Cowboys on brink of elimination
J.J. McCarthy passed for two touchdowns and ran for one to lead the Minnesota Vikings to a 34-26 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night at Arlington, Texas.
Jalen Nailor caught both scoring passes and C.J. Ham rushed for a touchdown as the Vikings (6-8) won their second straight game.
Dak Prescott completed 23 of 38 passes for 294 yards for the Cowboys (6-7-1), who lost their second straight game. Playoff hopes are slim as Dallas would need to win its final three regular-season contests and have the NFC East-rival Philadelphia Eagles lose all three of their games to land a postseason berth.
Javonte Williams (91 yards on 15 carries) and Malik Davis rushed for touchdowns for Dallas. CeeDee Lamb caught six passes on 10 targets for 111 yards for the Cowboys.
McCarthy completed 15 of 24 passes for 250 yards for the Vikings, who were eliminated from playoff consideration earlier Sunday.
