The North Carolina Tar Heels have begun the search for a new offensive coordinator after parting ways with Freddie Kitchens this past week. Kitchens lasted just one year under Bill Belichick, and UNC’s offense was among the worst in the country under his watch.

With a new search underway, one target is emerging and it’s a former SEC head coach.

Per On3’s Inside Carolina, former Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino has emerged as a candidate to take over for Kitchens at North Carolina. Petrino is one of the names on the hot board from IC and soon enough the program should narrow down the options.

Petrino was named the interim head coach for the Razorbacks after they fired Sam Pittman following a loss to Notre Dame. The Razorbacks went 0-7 to finish the year under Petrino, but the offense played well, averaging 32.9 points per game and 454.8 yards per game in the final seven games.

He has a lot of experience at both the college and NFL levels, working with offenses as well as quarterbacks. It feels like that’s just what the Tar Heels are looking for in their search for a new offensive coordinator. With a few young quarterbacks on the roster and an offense that needs to get better, this might be the perfect match.
