AUBURN — Alex Golesh will have three recent SEC coordinators on his first Auburn football staff, as the program announced the addition of Tim Banks as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach on Friday, Dec. 12.
Banks, who was fired as Tennessee’s defensive coordinator Monday, joins a staff that includes former Mississippi State defensive coordinator Coleman Hutzler and Auburn defensive coordinator DJ Durkin, who was retained for the same role on Golesh’s staff.
“Tim and I have worked together twice before and competed against each other for years, so I know that he’s one of the most respected defensive minds in college football,” Golesh said in a release. “He’s an elite teacher who develops players at the highest level, and beyond the football part, he’s a man of tremendous character who cares deeply about young people.”
Tennessee was one of the three worst defenses in the SEC this fall, but the Volunteers were among the SEC’s top five in scoring and total defense the two previous seasons.
Banks has a lengthy history of coordinating defenses. That’s been his only role in the sport since 2007, serving as defensive coordinator in some capacity at Central Michigan, Cincinnati and Penn State before getting to Tennessee in 2021.
