Former Texas A&M QB caps off impressive year with Texas Bowl win

One of the easiest and most enjoyable parts of covering Texas A&M is watching former players thrive with their new team. For the Aggies, one former starting quarterback, Haynes King, sadly ended his prolific career at Georgia Tech, losing to BYU in the Pop-Tarts Bowl after throwing an end-zone interception that could have won the game.

Still, King cemented himself as one of the most electric playmakers over the last three seasons, while fellow former Texas A&M signal caller Conner Weigman, who transferred to Houston previous offseason, capped off his impressive first year with the Cougars after defeating LSU 38-35 in the Texas Bowl on Saturday night, passing for an efficient 236 yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for 56 yards.

Aggie fans who watched Weigman progress as a pocket passer might be asking where this level of play was during his first three seasons in College Station. Still, due to multiple coaching changes, including current head coach Mike Elko replacing Jimbo Fisher after the 2023 season, Weigman lost the starting job to Marcel Reed towards the latter half of the 2024 campaign, and made the correct business decision to move on.

After dropping weight and getting in the best shape of his college career, Houston head coach Willie Fritz surrounded the junior QB with solid offensive options, including wide receiver Amare Thomas, running back Dean Connors, and tight end Tanner Koziel, who helped the former Aggie starter reach his full potential.

In a back-and-forth game, it’s fair to say that LSU’s defense was missing several starters, but Weigman continued to prove that he can make every throw, and finished his career vs. LSU with a 3-0 record. With likely one more season with Houston, the Cypress, Texas native has a much better chance of being drafted during the first two days of the 2027 NFL Draft.

Conner Weigman finished his first season in Houston with 2,711 yards, 25 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, while completing 65% of his passes and rushing for 700 yards and 11 touchdowns.
