A former Tennessee Volunteers football commit is trending to land with one of UT’s biggest (and most hated) SEC rivals.

A former Tennessee Vols commit is trending to land with one of UT football’s biggest SEC rivals.

2027 three-star cornerback Kamauri Whitfield committed to Tennessee last October following a visit to Rocky Top for the Vols’ win against the Arkansas Razorbacks. He decommitted from Tennessee in February.

Whitfield told Rivals.com that he decommitted because of the defensive coaching staff changes that Tennessee made during the offseason.

"I have decommitted from Tennessee," said Whitfield to Rivals. "The guys I had relationships with are no longer there. That was the biggest reason for my decommitment. They made a lot of changes with the defensive staff."

Tennessee moved on from defensive coordinator Tim Banks and secondary coach Willie Martinez after the 2025 season, two coaches who were key in Whitfield’s recruitment.

Whitfield, 5-foot-11/185 pounds from Orlando, FL, is rated by 247Sports as the No. 44 cornerback in the nation and the No. 36 player in the state of Florida.

According to On3’s Chad Simmons, the Florida Gators are trending to land Whitfield.

“Another target Florida continues trending strongly for is safety Kamauri Whitfield out of Orlando (Fla.) The First Academy,” noted Simmons. “Even before Whitfield decommitted from Tennessee, Florida generated momentum behind the scenes. The Gators have hosted him on campus multiple times this spring, and Sumrall's staff has consistently made him feel like a top priority.”

Whitfield has official visits scheduled to Florida, Oregon, Florida, State, Nebraska, and Virginia Tech.

Tennessee never seemed to reenage with Whitfield after he decommitted, which signals that new Vols defensive coordinator Jim Knowles doesn’t view the three-star defensive back as a priority.
