Fran Brown's Offers Unique Answer About How Syracuse Measures Up in ACC NIL Battle

The Syracuse football team has officially opened up training camp in preparation for the start of the regular season next month. This season is Fran Brown's third season as the head football coach of the Orange. In Brown's first season, the Orange won double-digit games for just the third time in the last 25 seasons (10), also playing in the Holiday Bowl. Last season, the Orange started with a 3-1 record but lost their next eight games to finish at 3-9.

Since entering the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) over a decade ago, the Orange have still yet to qualify for a conference title game.

In 2021, name/image/likeness deals (NIL) were introduced in college sports. With the inception of rules that allowed ways for schools and businesses to compensate top-tier athletes, football programs that have struggled the last two decades, like Syracuse, have found ways to compete again.

In the past five years, football programs like Indiana and TCU quickly rose up their conference standings and have even become have national championship contenders. TCU played in a national title game while Indiana won the title in 2025.

On Wednesday, Brown addressed where Syracuse ranks in comparison to other schools in the ACC with regards to NIL budgets.

What did Brown say?

After completing practice, Brown took questions from the media. In reference to a question of NIL, CNY Central's Ashley Wenskoski noted this on X about his response.

"I wouldn't ask my wife who she thinks is cutest coach around…there's certain things that you're better off just not knowing."

"I'm comfortable with who I am. Comfortable with what we have. Worry about ourselves."

Where does Syracuse actually rank among ACC teams?

While the budget of each football program in the conference is not clearly defined or reported, there is a way to gauge where Syracuse does rank in comparison to the league's members. The website TheNILStandard.com evaluates Syracuse as the 14th highest-valued roster of the 17 in the ACC. The Orange's roster is projected to cost 18.7 million, while the top estimated team, Miami, is projected at nearly 38 million.

What else to expect from Syracuse football training camp?

The Orange will continue with practices leading up to their first regular season game at home. SyracuseRoundtable will be at training camp on Friday, along with multiple other dates for post-practice interviews, pictures, analysis and more.

Syracuse will open its season on Sept. 5 against New Hampshire at the JMA Wireless Dome. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. ET.
