Freshman Jeron Jones to Take On New Role in Washington's Defense

Cornerback Jeron Jones has been one of the most impactful young players on Jedd Fisch's roster early in the season. Through the first two weeks, the first-year playmaker has lined up primarily at nickel, splitting reps with third-year Rahshawn Clark. After totaling 6 tackles, half for loss, and an interception in his first two starts, the Preseason True Freshman All-American is set to take on a new role in Ryan Walters' defense.

With starting corner Emmanuel Karnley currently week-to-week with a soft tissue injury, Jones will be the one to take his place on the outside against Eastern Washington. With Clark having plenty of experience playing nickel, Jones' flexibility in the secondary has made life much easier on his defensive coordinator.

"Kudos to (secondary coach John Richardson)," Walters said on Tuesday. "He repped him a lot outside and inside during fall camp and did the same during spring ball. So he got to learn both positions, and he plays both of them very well, and so to be able to have that flexibility and that versatility for a young guy is definitely impressive, and we're going to need him to be able to do both as the season goes."

The Mission Viejo, California, native was a four-star recruit coming out of high school, and after losing starting cornerbacks Tacario Davis and Ephesians Prysock to the NFL after the 2025 season, Karnley and sophomore Dylan Robinson were experienced options to fill the void in the secondary. However, a strong showing in spring and fall camp forced Jedd Fisch's staff to find a way to get the blue-chip recruit on the field.

After shining in the nickel alongside Karnley and Robinson, Jones will now make his first start on the outside against an FCS opponent in Eastern Washington. Based on the Huskies' past two performances, playing an inferior opponent is not a reason to take the foot off the gas, as the Eagles' offense features three receivers who have all eclipsed 100 yards receiving this season.

With Karnley's status still up in the air and the Huskies with Big Ten play looming, Jones will once again be thrown into the fire against an offense capable of moving the ball downfield. While attacking young, inexperienced corners tends to be a point of emphasis for opposing offenses, the dynamic defensive back has shown that that might not be the best idea.
