Freshman Missouri football wide receiver to enter transfer portal

The college football transfer portal doesn’t officially open until Jan. 2, but announcements signaling an intent to transfer will begin to filter in before then.

The first one rolled in Tuesday morning, as Missouri football redshirt freshman wide receiver James Madison II reportedly is expected to enter the transfer portal when it opens. The news was first reported by Matt Zenitz of CBSSports through Madison’s agency.

Madison did not dress for the last handful of games in the 2025 season. He only played 19 snaps all year, which were spread across three nonconference games against Central Arkansas, UMass and Louisiana.

The wideout who played at St. Thomas Aquinas High in Florida also only appeared in three games as a true freshman, too. He did not catch a pass in his time at Mizzou.

Madison, who is listed at 6 foot 3, 210 pounds and is from Kansas City, was buried on the depth chart behind outside receivers like Theo Wease Jr., Joshua Manning and, recently, Donovan Olugbode.

The wideout was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2024, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings.

The transfer portal officially opens Jan. 2 and will remain open through Jan. 16.

It’s unlikely that players who announce an intention to transfer will announce a new school before the portal officially opens, as that is the date their portal paperwork can officially be processed.
