FSU football lands Duke safety Ma’Khi Jones from NCAA transfer portal

Florida State football added depth to its secondary Tuesday, Jan. 13, signing former Duke safety Ma’Khi Jones out of the transfer portal.

Jones entered the portal Monday with a “do not contact” tag and did not visit FSU before committing. At 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds, Jones enrolled at Duke last January and saw immediate action as a true freshman.

He appeared in 14 games for the Blue Devils, recording 35 tackles (14 solo), 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack. His stat line also included a quarterback hurry, a pass breakup, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

According to Pro Football Focus, Jones posted a 66.4 overall defensive grade, highlighted by a 78.1 grade against the run and a 72.5 tackling grade. In coverage, he allowed just 87 yards on eight catches over 14 targets and did not surrender a touchdown.

Jones, originally from New Jersey, was a three-star prospect coming out of Milton High School in Georgia (247 Sports ranked No. 120 safety nationally and No. 139 in Georgia). He was also a three-star in the portal rankings.

Jones joins a Seminoles secondary that must replace Earl Little Jr., who committed to Ohio State last week, and Edwin Joseph. FSU now has 14 additions via the transfer portal this offseason.
