Gators back in national conversation with top-25 ranking after spring

Florida football could be re-entering the national conversation after a dismal four-win season a year ago. Following spring practice and team scrimmages in Gainesville, CBS Sports believes the Gators are primed to start things off among the top-25 this fall.
The ranking reflects a growing sense of optimism around the program since the arrival of Jon Sumrall. A completely revamped roster, new offensive coordinator and sweeping culture shift denote the first several months of Sumrall's tenure. The momentum has already had a tangible impact, with recruiting surging since the former Tulane head coaches' arrival.
In order to live up to this preseason hype, the Gators will need to answer some pressing questions — particularly regarding the quarterback situation and the program's offensive identity — which could decide the fate of the 2026 season for the Orange and Blue.
"The quarterback battle between Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. will continue into the summer, but Philo has the edge because of his familiarity with former Georgia Tech OC Buster Faulkner's system," author Brandon Marcello offers. "Jones, however, was impressive in the spring. Sumrall will mold the offense and defense around strengths, and the Gators will finally back up a top-25 roster with a top-25 ranking."
The recognition marks reestablished respect but fall short of trust. Pressure already mounts for Sumrall, who won't get the benefit of a grace period for this rebuild; the team will be expected to exceed its win total from 2025. In order to break through, the Gators will not just need to compete, they'll need to dominate inferior opponents and be competitive against the SEC elites.
