GAINESVILLE — UF quarterback DJ Lagway announced he’ll enter the transfer portal after two seasons with the Gators, culminating with a disappointing sophomore year that fell well short of expectations and ended in a 4-8 finish.

Lagway announced the decision on his Instagram account Monday, more than two weeks before the portal officially opens Jan. 2.

“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have been part of such an incredible program here at the University of Florida,” he wrote. “After much prayer, reflection, and thoughtful consideration, I have decided to enter the transfer portal.”

Expected to be a rising star and potential Heisman contender for a trending program, Lagway has failed to meet expectations. He finished Saturday with 16 touchdowns, an SEC-leading 14 interceptions and a passer rating (127) better than only one SEC quarterback, Auburn’s Jackson Arnold.

In the process, Lagway has raised questions about his fundamentals, decision-making and durability, along with his future at UF.
