Georgia and Clemson officially axe home-and-home football series

The intrepid Marc Weiszer of the Banner Herald has the news that Georgia and Clemson have scrapped the four game home-and-home football series that had been scheduled for 2029 through 2032.

Weiszer obtained a copy of the agreement which the schools actually signed back in March in which they mutually agreed not to play the series of interconference matchups, which had been rumored later to still be an option in a neutral site format that made one Georgia writer really mad. Turns out he didn’t have anything to worry about, other than whether those games will be replaced with Charleston Southern, the Citadel, or the Monck’s Corner School for Kids Who Don’t Read Good.

This series is just the latest victim of the SEC’s push to nine conference games. Given that Georgia already has an I state ACC rival in Georgia Tech the Dawgs are now guaranteed ten Power 4 games per year. Add in the specter of an ever-expanding playoff, which could force a team to play as many as six playoff games to win a national title, and there’s every reason to treat the regular season as a necessary annoyance rather than the main event.

While that ninth SEC game every year is likely to be a quality football game, it certainly won’t always be against a team with which Georgia has a long and rich history like the Country Gentlemen. I have nothing against the University of Missouri, but the fact is there’s still nothing particularly special about a matchup between the Dawgs and those Tigers, unlike the ones from Lake Hartwell.

Don’t worry through, the tickets you’ll be purchasing for the makeup game against Tennessee Tech will cost you just as much as the Clemson vouchers would have.
