ATLANTA — Georgia football and coach Kirby Smart are going to the SEC Championship game.

Once again.

Texas A&M’s 27-17 loss Friday night Nov. 28 to Texas clinched the No. 4 Bulldogs’ spot in the Dec. 6 game.

It came after Georgia improved to 11-1 with a 16-9 victory over Georgia Tech on Friday

That game had no bearing on the Bulldogs returning to Mercedes-Benz Stadium to try to repeat as SEC champions.

Georgia finished the SEC 7-1 two weeks ago after a 35-10 rout of Texas.

The Bulldogs will play either Alabama or Ole Miss depending on the outcome of Saturday games. Should Alabama win the Iron Bowl, it’ll be the Tide. If Auburn pulls off the upset, it’ll be Ole Miss.

The Bulldogs reached the SEC Championship game for a fifth straight season.

Only Florida under Steve Spurrier from 1992-96 reached five straight SEC title games.

There has been a lot of talk about whether going to the College Football Playoff without playing in the SEC championship game would be a better outcome for Georgia.

Smart said Friday he was not concerned about injury risk even after losing starting quarterback Carson Beck in the SEC championship win over Texas last year.

“This is also an opportunity to win an SEC championship,” he said. “Does that matter? Does anybody care about that anymore? I grew up thinking that was the greatest game in the world. I’m just different than everybody else.”

Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton, who came in for an injured Beck last year in the SEC championship game, views playing in the game in a positive light even if teams that didn’t play in title games last season made deep playoff runs.

“The championship game,” Stockton said. “That’s where you want to be at the end of the day.”
