The Georgia Bulldogs (7-1) are in the top five of the first College Football Playoff ranking after their close 24-20 win over the Florida Gators. The Bulldogs place No. 5, narrowly missing out on a bye, but getting a home playoff game in the first round.
A few teams fell out of the projected 12-team playoff field because of losses last week. Georgia Tech suffered their first defeat of the season against NC State, leaving the Yellow Jackets out. Overall, the ACC has just one team in the College Football Playoff (Virginia).
Vanderbilt also falls out of the 12-team field after falling to Texas 34-31. A fourth-quarter rally doomed them in the end, so they find themselves out of the playoffs too. Texas, meanwhile, is the first team out, slowly mounting their way to being another SEC team in the playoff bracket.
Overall, four teams from the SEC make the CFP (Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss), which is more than the Big Ten (Ohio State, Indiana, Oregon), the Big 12 (Texas Tech, BYU), and the ACC (Virginia).

UGA’s projected CFP opponent
The Bulldogs are projected to play the American COnference leader Memphis Tigers (7-1). Georgia has only played Memphis twice in the Bulldogs’ history, in 1982 and 1984. Both games ended in Georgia wins.
The Memphis Tigers look like the favorite for the Group of Five playoff spot after defeating the USF Bulls on Oct. 25. They are the No. 12 seed in this scenario, and the game would take place in Sanford Stadium. No Group of Five team made the top-25 rankings.
What are the rules in 2025?
The CFP is still 12 teams, similar to 2024. Five conference champions make the playoff, with the other seven seeds splitting at-large bids. However, the key difference is that the four highest ranked conference champions don’t get automatic byes anymore. Last year, all four bye teams lost their first playoff game (Oregon, Georgia, Penn State, Boise State), so this makes the stronger teams rewarded, despite either losing (or not making) their conference championship. As a result, two Big Ten teams (Ohio State, Indiana) and two SEC teams (Texas A&M, Alabama) make up the four bye spots.
